Travels in Mexico

Here is a quick update on what we have been up to since Cam kicked off his racing season at the first three world cups!

The shoulder is doing well; in fact I haven’t had an ounce of pain since the 5 week mark. I was able start training on whitewater 3 weeks ago. The first week consisted of taking it slow, being very careful, and switching it up with some kayak sessions to put a little less load on the shoulder. After that first week I moved into a sleeve style shoulder brace. The shoulder feels much more stable in the brace and is allowing me to dive back into whitewater training. The brace has its drawbacks but it is good solution for the time being. Surgery date has been delayed to September so that I can take a swing at qualifying for my provincial carding again. With the brace working well all should go smoothly but anything can happen.

Cam enjoyed a much needed physio session upon his return from Europe and is back at it. He’s currently in Fort McHenry Maryland training on the venue for this years Senior World Championships with the rest of the Canadian Senior Team.

I’m currently in Mexico as some of you might have seen from our Facebook updates. I am here with four other Junior/U23 athletes to participate in the 2014 pan american championships as well as qualify quota spots for Canada in the 2015 Pan American Games (in Toronto). The race kicks off today and I will throw up a live results link if one surfaces. I decided to come on this trip as Canada needed to send C-1 & C-2 boats and funding was available to cover the costs. I’m here to compete, but having just gotten back in the groove of training, the focus is to ensure we are represented at the games next year and have some fun. The culture here in the mountain town of Huachinango is unbelievable. The town is on the edge of their seats in excitement for the race and for the past week canoe slalom paddlers have become rock stars.

Here’s a taste of the trip but keep an eye on our Facebook page for a full album of pictures and our first video update.

The summer is just picking up so check our social media feeds for live updates on what’s going on with Smedley canoe.

Cheers,
– Liam
